Why this site puts the warning first

Search for Vanuatu citizenship from India and you will find contribution tables, processing times and contact forms. The fact that acquiring this passport ends your Indian citizenship tends to appear far down the page, in smaller type, phrased as a technicality.

It is not a technicality. Under Article 9 of the Constitution and the Citizenship Act 1955, voluntary acquisition of another nationality ends Indian citizenship automatically — no official decides it, no appeal exists, and the Indian passport must then be surrendered with a surrender certificate obtained. For most readers of this site that consequence is larger than anything the new passport provides, which is why it is in the first paragraph of the home page rather than the last.

What we try to state accurately

That OCI is a lifelong visa with financial parity for most purposes and not a form of citizenship — no vote, no public office, no agricultural land, granted on application and capable of being refused. That the travel gain against an Indian passport is real for parts of Asia and the Pacific and much smaller than the marketing claims. And that neither Europe nor the United Kingdom has been open on a Vanuatu passport since 2023.

Where the figures come from

The programme's fee structure: one hundred and thirty thousand US dollars for a single applicant, rising in set steps for a spouse and each child, with twenty-five thousand for each further dependant, and five thousand payable before any background check and refunded in no circumstance. Set by regulation, identical whoever files.
